Bank Note is a Glasgow whisky from the age of the great Clydeside liners, revived by one of Scotland's oldest independent bottlers. The brand's roots trace to James Sword & Co., among the largest blenders and bottlers loading whisky barrels onto cargo ships on the Clyde in the Victorian era, and the packaging still reflects branding from over 150 years ago. Today it's made by A.D. Rattray, founded in 1868 by Andrew Dewar Rattray as an importer of French wines and Italian spirits whose horse-drawn carts were a familiar sight in central Glasgow — and which became a specialist in blending and maturing malt and grain whiskies, now run by the Morrison family on Scotland's west coast. Bank Note is the only blend A.D. Rattray makes, and the reason is value: 40% Speyside and Highland single malt married with 60% Lowland grain whisky, aged a minimum of five years in American oak, bottled at 43% ABV rather than the usual 40%, and typically priced around $20. It's a mellow, honeyed blend of vanilla, raisin, clove, and winter pastry that drinkers routinely rate above Johnnie Walker Black at half the cost. The Peated Reserve adds a small proportion of Islay malt for burnt toffee, plum jam, ginger, and a distant smoke without disturbing the balance. Genuine Scotch heritage at a house-pour price.
