Bank Note Blended 5 Year Irish Whiskey is the Irish sibling of the Bank Note Scotch blend, and like it, it aims for a lot of whiskey for the money. It combines column-distilled grain whiskey with double-distilled pot still whiskey, all aged at least five years in American oak before blending.
It pours rich gold with a buttercup tint. The nose shows boiled sweets, Seville orange, coconut, vanilla and a little exotic spice. The palate is poached pear and marmalade with an emerging maltiness, and the finish is lightly drying with soft oak spice. The pot still component gives it more body than most entry-level Irish blends, so it sips well neat and holds its own in an Irish coffee, a whiskey sour or a highball.
