10th Street STR Single Malt American Whisky is the unpeated single malt from 10th Street Distillery in San Jose, California, founded by Virag Saksena and Vishal Gauri to make Scottish-style single malt in the heart of Silicon Valley. STR stands for shaved, toasted and re-charred, a barrel treatment popularized by the late whisky scientist Dr. Jim Swan in which used wine casks are scraped, toasted and charred to rejuvenate the wood, and 10th Street uses it to give this malt a bright, fruity character at 92 proof.
Drinkhacker rated it an A-, noting it smells like a Speyside single malt and hits the nose and palate with brightness and fruit, apple and lemon in particular. The distillery describes caramel, toffee and dark chocolate with toasted oak, vanilla and a touch of spice. It is the 10th Street whisky for Speyside and Highland fans, and one of the most convincing Scotch-style malts made in America. 10th Street has taken multiple gold medals for its single malts and remains a small, founder-run operation in San Jose.
