Amaro Averna is Sicily's most famous amaro, made in Caltanissetta since 1868 from a recipe that Benedictine monks entrusted to Salvatore Averna. It is a rich, bittersweet infusion of Mediterranean herbs, roots, and citrus, with notes of orange, licorice, caramel, and myrtle, and at 29% ABV it is one of the smoothest and most approachable amari in the world.
The authentic ritual is simple: sip it over ice from a softly curved glass with a single twist of orange peel to lift the aromatics, ideally alongside Sicilian sweets and good company. It is a classic after-dinner digestif, but bartenders also love it in a Black Manhattan, an Averna Sour, or topped with soda for a lighter spritz. Every home bar should have a bottle.
