Most distillers avoid heavy malted rye because it turns into a thick, sticky mess in the mash tun; Barber Lee does it the hard way, then ages the spirit in new, heavy-char American oak and bottles it at 45% ABV (90 proof).
The Whiskey Wash scored it 9 out of 10, calling it "alive and vivacious," with an orangey-red color, stone fruit like nectarine and peach, freshly toasted rye bread, cinnamon-roll spread and toasted sesame on the nose, and a palate that starts sweet and finishes warm and spicy without harshness.
