Becherovka Herbal Liqueur
Becherovka is the national herbal liqueur of the Czech Republic, made in the spa town of Karlovy Vary since 1807 from a secret recipe of some 20 herbs and spices. Created by pharmacist Josef Becher as a stomach tonic, it is still made the same way: the herbs are steeped in alcohol, blended with local spring water and sugar and rested in oak before bottling at 38% ABV in its distinctive green flat bottle. Sold in a 750ml bottle.
The taste is warm cinnamon and clove with ginger, anise and a gentle bitterness, sweeter and spicier than a typical amaro, with a long, soothing finish. Czechs drink it ice-cold as a shot or mixed with tonic over ice as a Beton, the country's favorite highball. It also works in a hot toddy or a spiced Old Fashioned. A must for lovers of herbal liqueurs and a great winter bottle.
