Blackened American Whiskey by Metallica is the band's whiskey, created with the late master distiller Dave Pickerell, the former Maker's Mark distiller who built WhistlePig, and carried on since 2019 by master distiller Rob Dietrich. It is a blend of straight bourbons and ryes, with bourbon leading for sweetness and the high-rye component bringing savory spice, finished in black brandy casks and bottled at 90 proof by Sweet Amber Distilling Co.
What makes Blackened unique is the finish. During cask finishing the whiskey is subjected to Black Noise, a trademarked process in which Metallica's music is played through subwoofers aimed at the barrels, using low-frequency sound waves to agitate the whiskey and drive it deeper into the wood. Breaking Bourbon rated Batch 107 3.5 out of 5, calling it equal parts strange and wonderful and definitely not a celebrity cash-in, with apricot, vanilla, caramel and oak on the nose, dark raspberry, blackberry, apricot and apple on the palate, and a finish of Dr Pepper, brandied cherries and dark brown sugar.
