Blume Marillen Apricot Eau de Vie
Blume Marillen ("blossom of the apricot") is an Austrian apricot eau-de-vie from Destillerie Purkhart, a family distillery that has made it for more than 40 years. It is distilled from the Klosterneuburger apricot grown in the Wachau, the Danube valley region famous for the fruit, and more than four and a half pounds of apricots go into every 375ml. The result is an unaged, unsweetened brandy that captures the orchard in full bloom.
The taste is pure ripe apricot with a delicate floral bouquet, a hint of almond from the stone and a long, elegant, dry finish. Serve it lightly chilled in a small glass after dinner, the Austrian way, or use it in cocktails where apricot brandy would be too sweet: a Wachau Sour, a stone-fruit Bellini or a splash in a gin fizz.
