Bowmore 18 Year Old is the mature statement from Islay's oldest licensed distillery, founded in 1779 on the shore of Loch Indaal. Matured for at least eighteen years in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks in the famous No. 1 Vaults, it shows how Bowmore's medium-peated spirit softens and deepens with age.
Bottled at 86 proof, the 18 offers stewed fruit, smoked meat and dark chocolate on the nose, then a chewy, rich palate of prune, toffee, tropical fruit, ash, iodine and a faint waft of petrol-like peat smoke. The finish is long and warming with dried fruit and a gentle salt-and-smoke fade. Drinkhacker rated it a B+ and noted its unusually chewy, doughy texture. It is a refined, after-dinner Islay malt and a serious gift for a peat lover who also appreciates elegance.
