Bowmore 12 Year Single Malt Scotch
Bowmore 12 Year Old is the flagship of Islay's oldest licensed distillery, founded in 1779 on the shore of Loch Indaal, where the legendary No. 1 Vaults sit below sea level. Bowmore still floor-malts part of its barley and dries it over Islay peat, then matures the 12 Year mainly in ex-bourbon casks with a portion of sherry wood for a balance of smoke and sweetness.
Bottled at 80 proof, the 12 Year is medium-peated rather than a peat monster: ashy smoke and a heavy maritime character on the nose, then honey, lemon, brine and burnt wood on the palate, finishing with lemon pepper, vanilla and lingering smoke. Drinkhacker rated it a B. It is the classic middle path of Islay, smokier than Bunnahabhain but far gentler than Laphroaig or Ardbeg, and a fine introduction to peated Scotch.
