Buzzard's Roost Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey
Buzzard's Roost is a Louisville, Kentucky blender founded by Judy Hollis Jones and Jason Brauner, and its whole identity is the barrel. The company buys well-aged whiskey from MGP in Indiana and re-barrels it in new 53-gallon oak built to its own specs, with proprietary seasoning and toast profiles and a very light char, usually the rarely used char #1, then finishes it for months rather than years at Bardstown Bourbon Company. Barrel Strength Bourbon, launched in late 2021, was the company's first bourbon after three years of rye releases. It is a blend of four- to six-year-old MGP bourbons from two different high-rye mash bills, married after their time in Buzzard's Roost barrels and bottled uncut at barrel strength, so the proof moves slightly from batch to batch (the first came in at 114.4). The producer's tasting note runs caramel, dark chocolate and baking spice with seasoned oak on the nose, backed by orange peel, dark fruit and tobacco, then vanilla, coconut, maraschino cherry and citrus on the palate, and a finish that balances structure and heat. Paste Magazine found cornbread, caramel, cinnamon and cocoa and scored it 8.5 out of 10.
