Buzzard's Roost Toasted American Oak Bourbon Whiskey
Toasted American Oak is the double-barreled bourbon from Buzzard's Roost, the Louisville, Kentucky blending house founded by Judy Hollis Jones and Jason Brauner that sources aged whiskey from MGP in Indiana and re-barrels it in oak built to its own toast and char recipes. This one blends four- and five-year-old bourbons from two mash bills, 74% corn, 21% rye, 5% malted barley and 59% corn, 36% rye, 5% malted barley, and moves them into brand-new 53-gallon American white oak barrels that have been carefully toasted and only very lightly charred. The whiskey spends a few weeks in that second barrel, enough to pick up the toasted layer without drying out, and is bottled at 105 proof (52.5% ABV). Buzzard's Roost's own tasting note: caramel, coconut and vanilla on the nose with delicate candy aromas, a palate that moves from the sweet toasted-oak character of the finishing barrel into confectionery and baking spice, and a rich, lingering finish of butterscotch, toasted oak, vanilla wafer and coconut. The color runs bronze into apricot. Whiskey Apostle found caramel, honey, cinnamon and pepper with a moderate drying oak finish. Good neat, better in a Boulevardier.
