Chaucer's Raspberry Mead

Chaucer's Raspberry Mead is Bargetto Winery's fruit take on the honey wine it has made in Soquel, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, since 1970. It is a blend of Chaucer's Mead with a portion of the winery's own raspberry wine, made from fresh California raspberries, which technically makes it a melomel, the old name for a mead fermented or blended with fruit. The honey side is the same base as the original: raw honey collected from local beekeepers across Northern California, a blend of alfalfa, orange blossom, sage and mountain wildflower, fermented without artificial flavorings, concentrates or colorings and never fortified, finishing at 10.5% ABV. Bargetto describes it as crisp, fruity and refreshing, with a palate that opens up with raspberry and honeysuckle and a lingering raspberry and honeysuckle impression on the finish, and notes that it drinks less sweet than the regular Chaucer's Mead because the raspberry wine brings acidity and brightness to the honey. Serve it chilled on its own or with dessert, and, as with all of Bargetto's meads, drink it within a year or two of purchase rather than cellaring it.
