Cleveland Wheat Penny 1958 Bourbon
Wheat Penny 1958 is Cleveland Whiskey's wheated bourbon, named for the last year the U.S. Mint struck the wheat-back cent, and every bottle has an actual wheat penny fixed to the cork, which the company says it will keep doing until it runs out of pennies. The mash bill is 51% corn, the legal minimum, with 45% wheat and 4% malted barley, unusually wheat-heavy even among wheated bourbons. It is made in Cleveland, Ohio using the pressure-aging process Tom Lix built the company around in 2009: young bourbon in pressure-capable stainless steel tanks with cut wood, the pressure cycled to drive the spirit in and out of the wood. Wheat Penny is finished with black cherry and toasted oak and bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV). Cleveland describes a nose of wood-fired oven, tobacco, cedar, campfire-toasted marshmallow and apple crisp, and a sweet-and-savory palate of salted caramel, clove and cinnamon with a thread of mesquite smoke into the finish. It earned a Double Gold at the 2021 SIP Awards, a Gold at the Proof Awards and a 92 from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2021. The wheat makes it Cleveland's softest bourbon; the cherry wood keeps it from being plain.
