Combier Le Bleu is a blue curaçao made at Distillerie Combier in Saumur, the Loire Valley house that invented triple sec in 1834 and has been distilling orange liqueur on the same site ever since. Founder Jean-Baptiste Combier and his wife were confectioners whose orange liqueur outsold their sweets; by 1848 they had built a full distillery beside the Saumur cavalry school, and today it runs ten historic copper stills under a still hall engineered by Gustave Eiffel's team, and is led by Franck Choisne, who joined as general manager in 1994 and later bought the distillery out from the Bollinger group. Le Bleu is not a novelty product bolted onto a neutral spirit: it uses the same orange liqueur base as Combier Liqueur d'Orange, made to the standards J.B. Combier set almost two centuries ago, and is bottled at a full 40% ABV rather than the low strength of most bar-rail blue curaçao. Combier describes it as carrying natural orange aromas, a bright citrus character and a smooth finish, so the colour does the visual work while the orange liqueur underneath contributes real flavour to a Blue Hawaiian, a Blue Margarita or any tiki build that calls for curaçao.
