Crotalo is named for the rattlesnake, crótalo in Spanish, and this is the bottle that made the brand famous: an extra añejo presented in a sculpted snakehead decanter. The tequila is made under NOM 1509 by Tequila Embajador in Jalisco, from 100% blue Weber agave cooked in stone and brick ovens, crushed on a roller mill, fermented in stainless steel and distilled in copper pot stills. The extra añejo rests five years in total, well past the category's three-year minimum, and is double-barrel aged using Crotalo's own proprietary maturation process. Production is limited to around 1,500 bottles a year, and the bottles are artisan hand-blown glass with hand-applied labels, which is part of why it has become a collector's piece as much as a drink. It is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). TEQUILA.net named it Best Extra Añejo Tequila in both 2011 and 2012. Tasters consistently describe oak, vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper, caramel, chocolate and barrel spice, with a smooth, light body that surprises people given how dark it pours. The brand positions it as a cognac-style sipper, so give it a snifter and some time. The snakehead stays on the shelf long after the tequila is gone.
