Dulce Amargura Blanco Tequila 1L
Dulce Amargura, "sweet bitterness," is a tequila house from El Arenal, Jalisco, in the Tequila Valley, famous for its hand-painted ceramic bottles made by Mexican artisans, and this is its blanco in a 1-liter bottle. It's produced at NOM 1466 from 100% blue Weber agave that grows for around five years before the brand's jimadores harvest it, using methods the house has followed for more than 30 years. The agave is cooked slowly in a stone and brick oven, crushed on a roller mill, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and double distilled in stainless pot stills with deep well water. Unlike most blancos, which go straight from still to bottle, Dulce Amargura rests this one for 30 days in French oak, a short stay that doesn't add much color but rounds off the young spirit. Total Wine's notes describe vanilla with hints of buttery notes, like a good chardonnay. It's a soft, velvety blanco that sips well chilled or neat, and it makes a noticeably richer margarita or Paloma than a standard unaged tequila. The ceramic bottle is the kind people keep and display long after it's empty.
