E.H. Taylor Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey
E.H. Taylor Single Barrel is the workhorse of Buffalo Trace's most collected line — VinePair's word — one hand-picked barrel at a time, bottled in bond. Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. built the distillery that became Buffalo Trace, pioneered climate-controlled warehouses, and pushed the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 through Congress; the line that bears his name has been Buffalo Trace's tribute since 2011. Single Barrel is the low-rye Mash Bill #1 behind Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Stagg, aged in Taylor's own Warehouse C — the brick rickhouse he built in 1881 — and bottled under the bond rules: one distillery, one season, at least four years, exactly 100 proof, from a single barrel selected by the distillery, with the natural variation that implies from bottle to bottle. Bourbon, Whiskey & Rye rates the drinkability five out of five — it drinks like 90 proof, not 100 — and notes the Taylor line's finishes run juicy where Eagle Rare's run dry. VinePair: a mix of reliability and punch that suits whiskey fans at every level. Expect caramel, vanilla, and butterscotch with orange peel, toasted oak, a soft rye spice, and a long, juicy, honeyed finish. Honest note: allocated, and at $100 to $300 on secondary the reviewers say it's not worth it — at retail it's one of the great bonded bourbons. Neat, in a Glencairn. The Colonel, one barrel at a time.
