Hamilton Beachbum Berry's Zombie Blend Rum
This rum is a collaboration between two of the biggest names in modern tiki: Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry, the historian who tracked down Donn Beach's lost original 1934 Zombie recipe in 2005, and Ed Hamilton, the rum importer and blender behind the Ministry of Rum. The original Zombie called for three separate rums, Puerto Rican, Jamaican and Demerara 151, and getting that balance right at home or behind a bar meant stocking all three. The two men spent about two years blending and testing, with Berry tasting and approving every iteration, to put that three-rum profile into a single bottle. The result is a blend of Caribbean rums bottled at 118 proof (59% ABV). The high strength is the point: it concentrates the flavor so two ounces of the blend can stand in for four ounces of the old three-rum combination while keeping the drink balanced. Hamilton said he wanted something that worked in bars, so he could finally put a Zombie on the menu. It first shipped in 2021, with Berry's revamped Zombie recipe printed on the back label. Beyond the Zombie, it is built for the Jet Pilot, the Cobra's Fang and Trader Vic's Tortuga.
