Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Michter's 10 Year is a single barrel of ten-year Kentucky bourbon at 94.4 proof — Paste scored the 2024 release 9.3 and called it a gloriously roasty, sweetly charred confection and one of the favorites of the year. Michter's traces its name to Shenk's, the 1753 Pennsylvania distillery; Joseph Magliocco revived the brand in Kentucky, built the Shively distillery and Fort Nelson downtown, and master distiller Dan McKee runs the most expensive process in bourbon — 103-proof barrel entry, the lowest in Kentucky, custom toasted-then-charred eighteen-month air-dried barrels, and heat-cycled warehouses. The 10 Year is one barrel, released in small annual allocations only when McKee's team decides the barrels are ready — some years it doesn't come out — and bottled at 94.4 proof with the barrel number on the label. Paste on 24A0130: charred, sweet oak with cocoa, chocolate, and burnt crème brûlée turning to flambéed banana and maple syrup on the nose; tons of sweet oak and char with French-roast coffee, toasted marshmallow, and chocolate-covered espresso bean on the palate; and a finish of lingering maple — remarkable depth for the proof. Honest note: the most allocated ten-year bourbon in Kentucky after Pappy — the one that made Michter's a collector's brand, and a bottle bars charge by the ounce for. Neat, in a Glencairn, slowly. Michter's, ten years, one barrel.
