Monkey Shoulder is the blended malt that made Scotch fun again, created in 2005 by William Grant & Sons, the family owners of Glenfiddich and Balvenie, from a marriage of Speyside single malts, originally Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. The name honors the old maltmen whose arms hung low after long shifts turning barley by hand, and the three brass monkeys on the bottle salute them.
Bottled at 86 proof, Monkey Shoulder is smooth and rich, made for mixing: vanilla, orange marmalade, honey and a hint of spiced oak on the nose, then a creamy, malty palate of butterscotch, dried fruit and gentle cinnamon, finishing soft and easy.
