Plantation, now renamed Planteray, is the rum brand of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house of Alexandre Gabriel, which buys aged rum from distilleries across the tropics and gives it a second maturation in its own cellars in the Charente. The Single Cask line is the top of that program: one barrel, one distillery, one year, bottled without blending. This one comes from Diamond Distillery on the Demerara River in Guyana, run by Demerara Distillers Limited, the last place on earth still operating the old wooden stills, including the Port Mourant double wooden pot still and the Versailles single wooden pot, which produce the dense, heavy Demerara character that rum collectors chase. The rum was distilled in 2008 from molasses on pot stills, aged in the tropics in ex-bourbon casks, then shipped to France to finish in Ferrand's casks in Cognac, and bottled in 2019 at eleven years old and 47.1% ABV. The style is classic Demerara: dark, oily and rich, with molasses, licorice, burnt sugar and wood smoke built up by the long tropical aging and softened by the Cognac-cask finish. A single-cask release from a distillery whose rum is otherwise sold mostly to blenders, best sipped neat.
