Planteray Mister Fogg Rum Sail No.1
Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum Sail No.1 is Maison Ferrand's recreation of the Royal Navy rum tot, named for the late Michael Fogg, a British naval veteran and rum impresario whose research into the Navy's blending practices shaped the project, and released alongside a 256-page book on three centuries of Navy rum. Alexandre Gabriel blended it the way the Navy's victualling yards did, from several Caribbean origins: 43% Barbados, 36% Trinidad, 17% Guyana and 4% Jamaica, distilled on both pot and column stills. Each component aged first in its home country, then the blend spent almost three years in ex-bourbon casks and open wooden vats in France, the dynamic, oxidative vatting the Navy used to marry its stock. It is bottled at 55.7% ABV, close to the historic issuing proof of the sailors' daily ration, in a 700ml bottle. The producer's notes describe dried fruit, orange peel, chocolate and burnt caramel on the nose, leading to a palate that is equally dense and sweet with smoke and ester-driven funk underneath. It is the first in a numbered Sail series, each one a different blend, so once this edition sells through the recipe will not be repeated.
