Ratu Fijian Extra Aged 8Yr Signature Rum
Ratu is the premium line from the Rum Co. of Fiji, which distills at the South Pacific Distillery in Lautoka, the only rum distillery on Fiji, in operation since 1980 and also behind the Bati and Bounty rums. The name Ratu means chief in Fijian, and the brand launched in 2016. The 8 Year Signature Blend is the top of the range and the oldest rum in it: molasses rum from Fiji's local sugar cane, aged eight years in used oak barriques in the island's warm, humid climate. Note that it is bottled at 35% ABV, below the 40% minimum for a rum in most markets, so in Australia and New Zealand it is labeled as a rum liqueur; the extra sweetness and lower proof are deliberate and make it a soft, dessert-leaning pour. Falstaff magazine rated it 87 points in its 2023 Spirits Special and described an intense nose with vivid chocolate, tropical fruit (especially banana) and sweet spices, a very sweet palate with savory notes and fruity nuance, and a medium-long savory finish. Serve it neat after dinner, over vanilla ice cream, or in an Espresso Martini where its chocolate-and-banana richness replaces the sugar.
