Rebel Yell 10 Year Single Barrel
Rebel Yell was created at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, the wheated-bourbon house behind W.L. Weller and Pappy Van Winkle, and after the distillery broke up in 1972 the brand landed with the David Sherman Corporation, now Luxco (owned by MGP since 2021). Rebel Yell 10 Year Single Barrel is the top of the line: a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon, mashbill 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted barley, aged at least ten years in new charred oak and bottled one barrel at a time at 100 proof (50% ABV), with the barrel number and an aged-since date on every label. The 2018 release ran 2,000 cases, and the whiskey ranked number 12 on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 of 2017. Lux Row head distiller John Rempe says ten years brings out sweetness, oak, caramel and vanilla, and that every barrel is different. The Whiskey Shelf's review found peanut brittle, caramel nougat, baked apple and roasted oak on the nose; dark caramel, dried citrus peel, clove, cinnamon and cocoa on the palate; and a long finish of oak, orange peel and baking spice. The brand has since been shortened to Rebel, so this bottle will not be restocked.
