Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey Bottled in Bond is the bartender's rye, the bottle behind more Manhattans and Sazeracs than any other in the craft cocktail era. Named for Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square and rooted in the Pennsylvania rye tradition, it is now made by Heaven Hill at the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky from a mash bill of 51% rye, 37% corn and 12% malted barley, aged at least four years and bottled in bond at 100 proof.
Breaking Bourbon rated it 3 out of 5 and called it a really great, versatile rye worth trying, with fruit and grain on the nose, dried banana and peach with malt, a fruit-forward palate with white pepper and light spice, and a finish of leather, charred oak and peach, noting it drinks lower than its 100 proof and makes an excellent entry point for bourbon drinkers exploring rye. Because it is not a 95% rye, Rittenhouse is rounder and sweeter than the Indiana style, which is exactly why it plays so well with vermouth and bitters. Every home bar should have a bottle.
