Sazerac Rye Whiskey
Sazerac Rye Whiskey is the New Orleans original, the rye named for the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where, in the 1800s, patrons were served toddies of rye whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters that became America's first branded cocktail. Today it is made by Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky and bottled at 90 proof, and whiskey fans call it Baby Saz because it is the younger sibling of the coveted Sazerac 18 Year from the Antique Collection.
It uses Buffalo Trace's low-rye mash bill, generally understood to be just over half rye with corn and malted barley, which gives it a rounder, fruitier profile than a 95% rye. Breaking Bourbon called it an essential rye that has stood the test of time and a must-have at its price, with orange zest, clove and raisin on the nose with rye spice and anise, sweet apricot, orange peel and plum with caramel and vanilla on the palate, and a finish where rye spice bursts forth into black licorice and dark fruit. It is, naturally, the definitive rye for a Sazerac cocktail, and just as good in a Manhattan.
