Skelly Tequila Añejo
Skelly is the Día de los Muertos collection from Los Azulejos, the Jalisco tequila brand whose founder's grandfather owned a hacienda in the state, and the liquid is produced at Casa Maestri, Destiladora del Valle de Tequila, NOM 1438, the distillery Michael and Celia Maestri established in 2008 in the town of Tequila. The Añejo is the top of the line and the most elaborate package: a hand-painted clay skeleton made by Mexican artisans, crowned with an intricate mariachi hat, with the tequila held in Skelly's body so you pop off the head and pour from the neck. The tequila is 100% blue Weber agave rested for 18 months in oak and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml figure. Los Azulejos describes a nose of cooked agave, pepper and anise, a palate where sweet, savory notes are balanced by the zesty, peppery, vegetal side of the agave, and a smooth finish, which is to say the wood adds depth without turning it into a dessert tequila.
