Smoke Wagon is the bourbon brand of Nevada H&C Distilling Co., founded in Las Vegas in 2012 by Aaron Chepenik and Jonathan Hensleigh, who built the brand on blending high-rye barrels from MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The Straight Bourbon is the entry point to the range, released in fall 2019 as an affordable everyday bourbon with the house profile of delicate sweet notes and a rye-spice finish. The mash bill is 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley, the same high-rye recipe as the small-batch bottlings, and the barrels for it are racked on the top two floors of the warehouse and never rotated, so they see the most heat and age faster. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 92.5 proof (46.25% ABV) in a 750ml bottle. Breaking Bourbon found caramel, honey and vanilla on the nose with toasted oak and baking spice, a palate of toffee, nutmeg, light oak and tobacco with more depth than the proof suggests, and a finish of caramel sweetness and light tobacco that fades into a brief burst of rye spice. A daily pour that holds up neat and over-delivers in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan.
