Stroh traces back to 1832, when Sebastian Stroh distilled his first spirits in St. Paul in the Lavant Valley of Carinthia, southern Austria, and the company has been headquartered in Klagenfurt ever since, now family-independent after a 2008 management buyout led by Harold Burstein. Its signature product is Inländer Rum, a protected Austrian category descended from the 19th-century practice of building a rum-style spirit at home when Caribbean rum was scarce, and Stroh 80, sold in North America as Stroh 160 for its US proof, is the strongest version of it. Since around 2016 the base has been alcohol distilled from molasses, which is what allows the rum label, and it is flavored with the company's secret blend of herbs and spices, bottled at 80% ABV (160 proof) in a curved flask inspired by Prohibition-era hip flasks. The flavor is unmistakable: heavy vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice with butterscotch and caramel underneath, like a spiced rum turned up to overproof. In Austria it goes into Jagertee at ski huts and into Kaiserschmarrn and holiday baking; in the US it is a tiki float and the overproof that lights a Scorpion Bowl. Handle with respect.
