The Presidential Dram Barrel Proof Bourbon Whiskey
The Presidential Dram is the inauguration-themed bottling from Proof and Wood Ventures, the Bardstown, Kentucky independent bottler Dave Schmier founded in 2015; the first release landed for the 2017 inauguration, built to celebrate the peaceful transfer of power without picking a side, so the bourbon wears blue wax and the companion rye wears red. This is the "One Term" bourbon, a single-barrel straight bourbon distilled and aged at MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the former Seagram's plant that has made whiskey since 1853, from MGP's 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley mash, aged at least four years in new charred oak (one presidential term), and bottled non-chill filtered at the proof it left the barrel. The 2021 edition was limited to 20 barrels, and because each barrel is bottled individually the proof varies by bottle, landing in the mid-110s. The Whiskey Wash scored it 4 out of 5 and found honey, caramel, vanilla and a floral note on the nose, then a warm palate of brown sugar, caramel, black plum and dark chocolate with less rye spice than the mash bill suggests, calling it typical of good MGP juice.
