Uncle Nearest 1856 is the inaugural release, first bottled in July 2017, from the brand built to honor Nathan "Nearest" Green, the formerly enslaved distiller in Lynchburg, Tennessee who taught a young Jack Daniel how to make whiskey and is the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. The 1856 on the label is the year Green is credited with perfecting the Lincoln County Process, the sugar-maple charcoal mellowing step that defines Tennessee whiskey, and every bottle of 1856 goes through it before aging in new charred white oak. It's a blend of multiple mash bills rather than a single recipe, curated batch by batch by master blender Victoria Eady Butler, Green's fifth-generation descendant, who was named Master Blender of the Year by Whisky Magazine in 2021 and 2022, and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV) by the Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee. The official notes run maple, vanilla, cherry, black pepper, almond cookies, and coconut with a dry straw note on the nose; a spicy palate of caramel, brown sugar, marzipan, chocolate-covered cherries, and crème brûlée; and a long, rich finish of spiced honey. It's the richer, higher-proof sibling to the 1884 Small Batch.
