Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch is the lighter-proof sibling to the brand's 1856 flagship, from the company Fawn Weaver founded to honor Nathan "Nearest" Green, the formerly enslaved distiller who taught Jack Daniel to make whiskey and is the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. The whiskey is a Tennessee whiskey made the Tennessee way: a mash of at least 51% corn, mellowed through sugar-maple charcoal, and aged in new charred oak barrels, with the brand stating a minimum age of seven years for the blend. Each batch is curated by master blender Victoria Eady Butler, Green's fifth-generation descendant, who was named Master Blender of the Year by Whisky Magazine in 2021 and 2022; the signature of the descendant who curated each batch is embossed on the back of the bottle. It's bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV). The official notes: honey, warm brown sugar, cedar, orange peel, tobacco flower, ground ginger, and white pepper on the nose; caramel balanced by spicy wood tannin with baking chocolate, cigar leaf, nougat, and cinnamon on the palate; and a long finish of cinnamon, dark chocolate, oak, and maple syrup.
