WhistlePig 15 Year Vermont Estate Oak Rye Whiskey is the first WhistlePig finished in oak harvested from the company's own farm in Shoreham, Vermont, and at 15 years it was the oldest whiskey in the range when it launched. The base is 100% rye aged fifteen years, and the finishing barrels are made from Vermont estate oak, which WhistlePig notes has more growth rings than typical barrel oak, each one another chance to add flavor. It is bottled at 92 proof.
The Whiskey Wash scored it 88 out of 100, describing rich, buttery toffee and citrus on the nose, warm caramel followed by black pepper and clove with a mild, almond-like earthiness from the Vermont oak on the palate, and a finish of lingering spice and warmth, calling it smooth, just sweet enough and a great entertaining whiskey for slow sipping. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 97 points. Fifteen years of age sands down the sharp rye edges into something plush and dessert-like, and the estate-oak finish gives it a signature you will not find in any other aged rye.
