Willett Pot Still Reserve is the Kentucky straight bourbon that the Willett Distillery of Bardstown, Kentucky put out in 2008, and this is the 50ml miniature of it, sold under the same pot-still-shaped bottle that won a double gold for design at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition the same year the whiskey itself took gold for taste. The company behind it was built by the Willett family after Prohibition, with the first batch run on March 17, 1936, and it was bought in 1984 by Even Kulsveen, the Norwegian son-in-law of Thompson Willett, who ran it for decades as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, an independent bottler sourcing and selecting barrels from other Kentucky distilleries before returning to the Willett Distillery name and restarting its own stills in 2012. Pot Still Reserve launched as a single barrel bourbon and later moved to small batch, bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV). The retailer tasting notes run to brown sugar, caramel and floral notes on the nose, a creamy palate of vanilla, cinnamon and butterscotch, and a finish of mint, spice and earthy wood. A miniature is the right way to try it or to top off a bourbon gift.
