Fee Brothers Molasses Bitters come from the Fee family of Rochester, New York, whose business began with an 1840s butcher shop and a wine and liquor store opened in 1864, though the label carries 1863 because a grandfather liked how it scanned in a limerick. The Fees rode out Prohibition making cordial syrups and altar wine, turned to cocktail mixers in the 1950s, and are now in their fourth generation under Joe and Ellen Fee, who today make close to twenty bitters on a vegetable-glycerin base. This one is built for dark-spirit drinks: a blend of blackstrap molasses, the darkest grade of molasses, with nutmeg and coffee, bottled at a low 2.4% ABV with no artificial coloring. The producer pitches it for Caribbean-style drinks, and it slots naturally into a rum Old Fashioned, a Dark 'n' Stormy, hot buttered rum or a rum Manhattan, and it works with bourbon and coffee cocktails as well. Sold in the 5 oz dasher-top bottle.
