Casamigos started as a house tequila for two friends' neighboring vacation homes in Cabo — George Clooney and Rande Gerber were ordering so much of it that the distiller told them they needed a license. They launched it commercially in 2013 with Mike Meldman, and Diageo bought it in 2017 for close to a billion dollars, kicking off the celebrity-tequila era; the name means house of friends. The Blanco is 100% blue Weber agave grown a minimum of seven years in the red clay of the Los Altos highlands, roasted 72 hours in traditional brick ovens, roller-milled, slow-fermented 80 hours with a proprietary yeast — nearly double the industry standard — double-distilled, rested two months in stainless steel, and bottled at 40% ABV, with the founders' signatures on the label; it was made at NOM 1416 and now at NOM 1609, so check your bottle. Spirit Animal, expecting to hate it, found it pretty damn good — brown butter, maple, and clove with real richness on the nose.
