Chamucos Blanco Tequila
Wine Enthusiast called Chamucos Blanco a raw, visceral, sexy tequila — savory, almost meaty, reminiscent of pechuga mezcal. Chamucos was conceived in 1992 by Oscar-nominated Mexican film director Antonio Urrutia and his friend César Hernández, a hand-blown glass artist; the chamucos are the dark, shadowy creatures of Mexican folklore who visit briefly in dreams, and they dance across a recycled-glass bottle whose cut-out label folds into a three-dimensional piece. The Blanco is 100% organic Los Altos highland agave, cooked, fermented, distilled in a custom stainless alembic, and bottled unaged at 40% ABV; the brand has moved distilleries over the years — NOM 1433, 1414, 1558, and 1586 — so check your bottle, and Agave Matchmaker's tasters treasure the older 1414 lots. Wine Enthusiast: all that umami softened by a rounded, waxy honey mid-palate, finishing herbaceous and peppery. Tequila.net: pronounced citrus and vanilla, mildly sweet up front into vegetal, strong agave with lively citrus, mild spice — if it's not in your cabinet, you're missing something wonderful. One Agave Matchmaker taster loves funky town, and says Chamucos scratches that itch. Honest note: this is a funky, savory, character-heavy blanco, not a clean one — the drinker who wants smooth and sweet should look elsewhere; the one who wants a blanco with a pulse should look here. For a Margarita with attitude, or neat. The shadow creatures.
