John J. Bowman Single Barrel Bourbon
John J. Bowman Single Barrel is the flagship bourbon of A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which opened its current Spotsylvania County home in 1988 and began distilling there in 1991. It is named for Colonel John J. Bowman, who served as the first military commander and governor of Kentucky County, Virginia, before Kentucky became a state. The whiskey starts as new make from Buffalo Trace, widely understood to be its low-rye Mash Bill #1, which is distilled twice in Kentucky and then a third time at A. Smith Bowman in the distillery's copper pot still before aging in Virginia. There is no age statement, but the brand has described the barrels as roughly nine to ten years old, and each bottle comes from a single hand-selected barrel bottled at 100 proof, so barrel-to-barrel variation is part of the appeal. Breaking Bourbon's review found baking chocolate, baked bread, vanilla, green apple, and toffee on the nose, a creamy palate of malted chocolate and oak, and a long finish of leather, pepper, and chocolatey caramel. An easy recommendation neat or in a Manhattan.
