Breckenridge Distillery sits at 9,600 feet in the Rocky Mountains, making it the world's highest distillery — and the altitude isn't a gimmick, it's the entire premise. Founder Bryan Nolt, a radiologist by training, tested water in around a dozen Rocky Mountain towns with distiller Jordan Via before settling on Breckenridge. As Nolt puts it, the local snowmelt is full of minerals with a perfect pH, and those minerals add taste to the spirit the same way salt adds flavor to food. Founded in 2008, the distillery released its first bourbon and vodka in 2011 and built its reputation fast. The flagship Bourbon is a high-rye blend — 56% corn, 38% rye, 6% malted barley — aged in charred new American oak and proofed with that snowmelt water, delivering butterscotch, candied orange, and apple over dry cacao, brown sugar, vanilla, and white pepper. It's won Best American Blended at the World Whiskies Awards four times, Bourbon of the Year at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, and Colorado Distillery of the Year. The lineup has grown well beyond it: Port Cask, PX Sherry Cask, and Madeira Cask finishes, a high-proof expression, Spiced Whiskey, Mountain Shot, plus gin and vodka. It's also the official whiskey and vodka partner of the Denver Broncos.
