Bunnahabhain 12 is the distillery's flagship and one of the best arguments in Scotch that Islay doesn't have to mean peat. Founded in 1881 at the mouth of the Margadale River on Islay's remote northeastern coast — accessible only by boat until 1960 — the distillery runs some of the tallest stills on the island and built its name on unpeated, sherry-matured, unmistakably coastal whisky. The 12 was relaunched in 2010 with a jump to 46.3% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural color, which is exactly why reviewers keep calling it a benchmark for integrity bottlings at an accessible price. Matured in a combination of Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks. Expect figs, dates, and prune interwoven with sea spray, plus orange cream chocolate, marzipan, toffee, hazelnut, and cashew on the nose. The palate runs oily and velvety — juicy orange, red fruit, and cherry giving way to a saline coastal shift, then black pepper, ginger, clove, milk chocolate, and roasted walnut — finishing long on dried fruit, caramel, cinnamon, and salted nuts.
