Bunnahabhain Toiteach a Dhà Scotch Whisky
Bunnahabhain built its identity on being Islay's unpeated outlier, which makes this bottling the interesting exception. Toiteach a Dhà — Gaelic for "Smoky Two," pronounced roughly toch-ach a ghah — is the sequel to the original Toiteach launched in the late 2000s, and it does two things at once: peated malted barley smoked to a genuinely assertive level, married to a much higher sherry proportion than the rest of the core range, roughly 75% ex-Oloroso casks to 25% ex-bourbon. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, non-chill filtered, natural color, no age statement. Expect dry peat smoke, cold ash, scorched grass, brine, and crushed peppercorn on the nose, lifted by lemon zest with Oloroso fig, raisin, and walnut underneath. The palate turns oily and peppery with smoke and vanilla trading places over a surprisingly creamy texture, plus dark chocolate, orange, mint, and ginger, finishing long on dry pepper, salt, and dark sugar. WhiskyNotes called it decent complexity and really good value, an interesting option for Islay whisky on a budget. Fair warning from one reviewer: this is more peated than sherried, so don't expect a smoky sherry bomb. Excellent with mature cheddar or dark chocolate.
