Burgess Promiscua Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Burgess Cellars was founded in 1972 by Tom Burgess on the historic Howell Mountain site of Lee Stewart's original Souverain Winery, a cellar that once drew Mike Grgich and Warren Winiarski, and remained in the Burgess family until the Lawrence family, owners of Heitz Cellar, acquired it in 2020. Winemaker Meghan Zobeck, a former NFL agent turned vintner, has since reshaped the house around organic farming and what she calls promiscuous viticulture, letting cover crops run freely between the vines to build soil life. Promiscua is the wine that embodies that philosophy: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate's Sorenson Vineyard on the steep western slopes of Howell Mountain and the 50-acre Quartz Creek Vineyard on the valley's western benchland. The 2021 was fermented with native yeasts via pied de cuve and aged 22 months in French oak, just 20% new, then bottled at a restrained 13.5% ABV, with 2,142 cases produced. Zobeck describes an aromatic, energetic wine of freshly cut cedar, red cassis, red plum and Luxardo cherry, slightly floral, delicate yet complex and built to age. Pair it with roast duck, herb-crusted lamb or a wild mushroom risotto. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
