Harbison Estate Pony Express Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Harbison Estate is a tiny family-owned property in the heart of Oakville, farmed by the Harbison family on the valley floor between Highway 29 and the Napa River, in the same gravelly alluvial soils that feed neighbors like To Kalon and Harlan. The wines are made by Thomas Rivers Brown, the two-time Wine Spectator 100-point winemaker, and production is small enough that most bottles go to a mailing list. Pony Express is the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon, named for the historic mail route, and it is built from hand-harvested estate fruit fermented in small lots and aged in 100% new French oak for roughly 20 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered at about 14.8% ABV. The 2018 vintage, a long, cool, textbook Napa year, delivers a saturated purple wine with a flamboyant nose of crème de cassis, black raspberry, violets, graphite and sweet tobacco, a full-bodied palate of plush, ultra-fine tannins and a finish that goes on for a minute. Decant an hour and serve with prime rib or a dry-aged porterhouse. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
