Hess Maverick Ranches Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon
Swiss entrepreneur Donald Hess founded The Hess Collection on Napa's Mount Veeder in 1978, and the family company, now Hess Persson Estates, has always been drawn to rugged, frontier vineyard country. Maverick Ranches is their Paso Robles project, sourcing from the region's warm, high-diurnal-swing vineyards where limestone and calcareous soils give Cabernet Sauvignon ripe, generous fruit and soft structure. The current release blends 87% Cabernet Sauvignon with 13% Petite Sirah for added color and spine, aged 12 months in 50% new French oak and bottled at 14.2% ABV. The winemaking team describes aromas of black plum, currant, blackberry, cardamom and vanilla with a hint of cinnamon toast, then a palate of fine tannins carrying black cherry, raspberry and mulberry into a finish of chocolate-covered cherry, dried herbs and toasted oak. It is a crowd-pleasing weeknight Cabernet that handles burgers, barbecue tri-tip, smoked brisket or a sharp cheese board with ease. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
