Ink Grade is the Howell Mountain estate that Gaylon Lawrence acquired with Heitz Cellar in 2018; Heitz had long used the ranch as a blending source, and in 2020 Lawrence Wine Estates CEO Carlton McCoy launched it as its own label under winemaker Matt Taylor, a Windsor native who spent six years at Eisele Vineyard and worked at Domaine Dujac and Joseph Swan. The roughly 750-acre ranch on the Pope Valley side of the Howell Mountain AVA has about 540 acres of vines farmed organically and biodynamically with Demeter certification. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon finishes at a restrained 14.0% ABV and presents in a wooden box. James Suckling gave it 94 points for pine needle, flowers, currants and ripe plums with fine, polished tannins; the Wine Advocate scored it 94+ for sappy pine, blueberries and cherries over a velvety, bright frame; Decanter gave 93 for explosive red and black fruit and grippy mountain tannins; Wine Enthusiast 93 and Wine Spectator 92, with 5,600 cases made. Pour it with lamb shoulder, venison or aged Gouda. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
