Ink Grade Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Ink Grade Estate occupies a remote, east-facing bowl in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA, hidden among dense pine and sequoia stands with a view unknown to most of Napa. The site was first planted in the nineteenth century, and the modern estate belongs to the Lawrence family's portfolio alongside Heitz Cellar and Burgess, with its first release the 2019 vintage. The vineyard is terraced into an extreme slope of volcanic tufa soil, farmed organically, and its raw tension yields fruit of unusual intensity and freshness. Winemaker Matt Taylor crafts the Cabernet Sauvignon in a restrained, Old World register: native fermentation, aging in French oak with a modest share of new barrels, and bottling around 13.9% ABV in 750ml, notably lower than the Napa norm. The wine shows black cherry, cassis, crushed stone, dried herbs and graphite, with the firm, mountain tannins Howell Mountain is known for and a long, mineral finish that rewards decanting now or a decade in the cellar. Pair with lamb loin, wild boar ragu or aged Manchego. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
