Robert Mondavi founded his Oakville winery in 1966 on the To Kalon Vineyard, the storied Oakville site first planted by H.W. Crabb in the 1860s, and Ode to Soul is the winery's collaboration with VII(N) The Seventh Estate, the wine company founded by NBA legend Carmelo Anthony and Asani Swann. Sourced exclusively from To Kalon's prime, well-drained benchland, the 2022 is a near-equal marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, roughly 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, bottled at 14.5% ABV in 750ml. The Cabernet Franc share gives it a perfume and lift unusual for Oakville, with aromas of earth, plum, licorice, violet and a subtle hint of date, followed by black plum and candied black cherry on a powerful yet elegant palate with good weight, pretty structure and fine tannins. The 2022 vintage was warm and concentrated, and the wine should drink well for 15 years or more. Pair it with lamb chops, duck breast or a rich mushroom dish.
