Panamá-Pacific 9 Year Old Exposición Rum
The Exposición name points straight to where this rum's story starts: the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, the world's fair that celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal. The brand belongs to the Haas Brothers, who have been in the California spirits trade since 1851, and the rum is made at Ingenio San Carlos in Panama as a Spanish-style rum from sugarcane molasses, distilled on a historic Coffey copper column still run at slightly lower proof to build a richer spirit. The youngest rum in the blend is nine years old. It spends its first three years in Kentucky bourbon casks and the rest of its time in exhausted Tennessee whiskey barrels, tired wood that adds vanilla and caramel gently instead of piling on fresh char. It is bottled at a fuller 47.3% ABV (94.6 proof). The nose brings oak, vanilla, toasted muscovado sugar, crème brûlée, cacao and tropical fruit; the palate opens buttery with dark caramel, then warms through cherry, almond and cocoa nibs before a butterscotch finish. A serious sipping rum for the money, and it has the proof to stand up in an Old Fashioned.
