Charles Krug is Napa Valley's oldest winery, founded in 1861 by the Prussian immigrant Charles Krug and owned since 1943 by the Mondavi family, who have run it for three generations under Cesare and Rosa, then Peter Mondavi Sr., and today Peter Jr. and Marc Mondavi. The Family Reserve line is the estate's top tier, and the Howell Mountain bottling comes from the family's Cold Springs Vineyard, planted in the volcanic, iron-rich soils above the fog line at roughly 1,800 feet in Napa's first sub-appellation. Howell Mountain fruit is famously small-berried and tannic, and winemaker Stacy Clark manages that power with gentle extraction and around 20 months in French oak barrels, a majority new, before bottling at about 14.8% ABV. Roger Morris of Wine Review Online rated the 2021 92 points, praising intense, concentrated blackberry fruit, a creamy texture, moderate dusty tannins and real depth, with fruit that leans sweet without tipping over. Expect blackberry, cassis, black cherry, cocoa, graphite and mountain sage, with firm, fine-grained tannins that will carry it 15 years or more. Serve it with roast lamb, grilled porterhouse or braised oxtail. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
